Since , the Académie Goncourt has had ten life members, who meet every first Tuesday of the month in the first-floor salon at Drouant (known as the Salon Goncourt) to discuss current literary events. In autumn, the Goncourt jury announces a first and then a second selection of books, and decides at a lunch and vote in early November on the winner of the year’s Goncourt prize. The whole process takes place in the restaurant’s Salon Goncourt. The winner receives a symbolic cheque for ten euros.
