Definition of “tapirer”: To change the color of a bird’s feathers, especially to yellow or red. The bird is plucked and smeared with an ointment made from annatto seeds and amphibian skin, after which its feathers grow back a different color. This technique was discovered and practised by the Indians of the Amazon basin.
Beautifully framed print of an engraving by Jacques Barraband (1768-1809) from the book “Histoire naturelle des parroquets” published in 1805.
