Following the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine at the end of the Franco-German war of 1871, the Sarreguemines earthenware factory (now in German territory) joined forces with the Digoin earthenware factory (located some 500 kilometers from Sarreguemines) in order to avoid customs taxes on the export of its earthenware.
In 1918, Alsace and Lorraine became French again.
