David Johnston (1789-1853) was the son of an Irish wine merchant. He founded an earthenware factory in 1834 on the Quai de Bacalan in Bordeaux, and joined forces with Jules Vieillard in 1840. He would eventually sell his shares to her a few years later. He was also mayor of Bordeaux from 1838 to 1842 and regional councillor.
