Following Bismarck’s war (1871) which annexed Alsace and Lorraine to Germany, Paul de Geiger, then director of the Sarreguemines faience factory, decided in 1876 to build a factory on French territory to offset the increase in the price of his products (taxed at 15%) in France. The construction of this new production unit in Digoin (Saône et Loire) began in 1877. This is why some old productions from Sarreguemines bear the stamp “Sarreguemines Digoin”. This production, stamped U&Cie Sarreguemines, seems to be quite old.
